🎥 Self-tape in a commercial casting
A self-tape is a video recording in which a candidate presents themselves and performs a script or task provided by the agency or client — instead of attending a live audition.
It is a remote casting format that has become extremely popular in advertising and fashion because it allows clients to quickly compare many candidates while saving production time.
1. WHAT IS A SELF-TAPE IN ADVERTISING?
- Your video business card — showing your personality, energy, appearance and suitability for the brand.
- It may include: a short introduction (slate), full-body shots, a short scene, dialogue or action.
- In commercials, authenticity, a natural smile and positive energy matter more than perfect acting skills.
2. HOW TO RECORD A SELF-TAPE STEP BY STEP
🎥 PREPARING YOUR EQUIPMENT & SPACE
1. Background
Use a clean, plain background (for example a light-colored wall or neutral backdrop). Avoid clutter and distracting objects.
2. Lighting
Natural daylight is best. Make sure the light is facing your face and avoid harsh shadows.
3. Camera / Phone
Place your camera or phone at eye level — ideally using a tripod or stable surface.
4. Outfit
Wear neutral colours and clothing appropriate for the role or casting brief.
🎬 WHAT SHOULD YOU RECORD?
1. Slate
Introduce yourself:
- name & surname,
- age,
- height,
- city,
- agency.
2. Profile & Full Body
Show:
- front profile,
- side profile,
- full posture/body shot.
3. Scene / Task
Perform the task or script exactly according to the casting instructions.
4. Extra Shots
Sometimes it’s useful to include:
- a natural smile,
- hands,
- hair movement,
- close-up beauty shots.
💡 PRO TIPS
- Look slightly beside the camera lens (unless instructed otherwise).
- Speak clearly and naturally.
- Record several takes and choose the best version.
- Save the file as MP4 (usually 50–150 MB).
- Name the file exactly as instructed by the casting team.
WHY ARE GOOD SELF-TAPES IMPORTANT?
A strong self-tape can significantly increase your chances of being selected for a casting.
Clients are not only looking at appearance — they also pay attention to:
- confidence,
- natural energy,
- communication skills,
- camera presence,
- professionalism.
Sometimes a simple, authentic self-tape works better than an overproduced video.
SUMMARY
A self-tape is now one of the most important tools in modern commercial casting.
Good lighting, natural energy, clean framing and authenticity are often far more important than expensive equipment.
Remember — clients want to see the real you.
